Amalia Enache, "Woman of the Year 2011" for the support given to the Hope and Homes for Children Romania organization

Winter is a time when many of the most dramatic separations between children and families take place. Not because their parents no longer want them – these are families that desperately want to stay together – but because the cold of winter unmasks the hideous face of poverty and the only solution the State offers to these families is “saving” their children by locking them up in cold and impersonal institutions that look like municipal hospitals.

Serban is 21 years old. When he was 12, he was institutionalized, after being found on the streets in a state of precarious health. He was abusing hallucinogenic substances. Serban was born in a family with 11 children. His parents had separated and the breakdown of Serban’s family was caused by his father’s excessive drinking and his mother’s immoral behaviour.

I believe that we are born knowing. While living in our mother’s uterus, we learn how a heartbeat sounds and how emotions vibrate on our skin. And when we go out into the world, we already know how to be happy and sad and calm or indignant. From the very first moment, we know how to scream when we are in pain, to smile when we are comfortable, to cry when we feel nostalgic.
